Roye makes history with T&T Golf Open title
HISTORY WAS created at the Plantation Golf course in Tobago as Zandre Roye became the first Jamaican to win the prestigious Trinidad and Tobago Open which culminated over the weekend.
The St Ann native was in scintillating form over the four rounds carding a four over par 292 to secure the championship title.
Roye had to battle tough dry conditions on the Tobago course and recorded a four over par opening round and followed that up with a one under par second round and then a one over par third round.
With a nine-shot lead heading into the closing holes, Roye shot an even par final round to secure the victory over the 27-man field.
Trinidadian Zico Correia was the next best golfer at the championship, carding a 13 over par 301 with compatriot Charles Richards Jr third following his score of 18 over par 306.
For Roye, the win was a testament to hard work and discipline, which he has been employing in his game this year.
“I am so overjoyed as this is my biggest win so far. I have played in four tournaments and have won two, so this is a good start for me as the aim is to get inside the top 500 in the world,” said Roye.
The championship victory was just the tip of the iceberg for Roye, who also won the President Cup with T&T’s Chris Richards Jr coming in second and St Kitts and Nevis’ Adrian Norford, third.
Jamaica’s other participants at the championship, Oshae Haye and Sean Morris, finished in 15th and 18th, respectively, with the former shooting a 43-over par round of 331, while Morris carded 46 over par 334.
Roye will now focus on his home course at Upton in St Ann for the upcoming Easter Jamboree.
