England wants old boys to help get Calabar back on top
ONE OF the outstanding stars of Boys’ Championships in the midto late 1980s, former Calabar High athlete Daniel England, was back at the National Stadium yesterday to support the athletes from the Red Hills Road-based school.
England, who attended Calabar from 1986- 90, competed in the 200 and 400 metres and lost only once at the championships during a period when the green-andblack-clad athletes were kings of Champs.
The former sprint star, who now resides in the United States, said it was good to be back to give his support to his former school.
“The feeling is good to attend the championships and being able to lyme with past athletes and friends as it brings back memories of the past,” stated England.
“I am extremely happy to be back inside the stands as when I competed at Calabar coach Herb McKenley did not allow us to do so,” he continued. One of the fans he met yesterday was veteran broadcaster and commentator Robert ‘Bobby’ Fray. “I am elated to see Mr Fray, who gave commentary at Champs during my days, and he was the one who gave me that name ‘Little Warrior’, and I cannot forget that,” England said.
He said he likes the work new head coach Corey Bennett has been doing at Calabar.
“I like what I am now seeing at Calabar under head coach Bennett as there has been some progress. I think recruiting is a problem, however, as we do not have the numbers to compete with the big two, Kingston College and Jamaica College,” he said.
England called on the school’s old boys to help to rebuild the team.
“I love Calabar, and I am giving back because of my love ,and I am not seeking anything in return. If most of the past students can come back and give their support, even in mentoring one student, I think we can get back on top,” said England.
