Jamaica’s Water – Every drop is precious

- PETER CLARKE Managing Director Water Resources Authority (WRA)

THE PROVISION of water to citizens and various industries has always been a game-changer that improves health and social wellbeing, productivity and peace of mind. However, we can only provide that which we have, and to have water now and in the future means that we must manage the resource well. It has been said that ‘the noblest of tasks is to make running water run’.

While there are many players in the grand scheme of water production and delivery, properly planned water projects are initially scoped with consideration for location of water sources, quality and quantity of water available. The Water Resources Authority (WRA) is tasked to provide these initial responses so that projects can be developed efficiently, effectively and sustainably.

In commemorating World Water Day 2024, we are directed to consider the United Nations theme: ‘Leveraging water for peace’. Clearly, the lack or loss of water creates economic disruptions, and results in frustrations and other negative emotions. In supporting all legal abstractors of water, the WRA licensing regime grants fair allocation of the resource, in such a manner that conflicts between abstractors are obviated.

The sub theme of the Ministry of Economic Growth & Job Creation is: Water and Youth. This presents two perspectives. One is the task of ensuring that water is sustainably managed for the future. In all our actions, we are obligated to implement in such a manner that the youth will reap the richest of legacies that present-day planners can provide. On the other hand, the youth must be encouraged to join us as environmental stewards; to learn is to earn and so the WRA remains committed to engaging our young stakeholders through site tours and school visits.

The old saying holds true: You never miss the water until the well runs dry. The WRA, even while facing the challenges of climate change, remains committed to sustainably managing Jamaica’s water resources. This means that our wells remain productive as best as possible for as long as possible, and that our rivers are tapped in an austere manner so that ecological systems are best preserved. At WRA we live the mantra: Jamaica’s Water – Every drop is precious.
