AVERTING ‘WATER WARS’

Engaging Jamaican youth in water conservation

- OMAR WRIGHT Lead – Environment and Community Development Programmes, JN Foundation

AS THE world commemorates World Water Day 2024 under the theme ‘Leveraging Water for Peace’, it is imperative to reflect on the vital role that water plays in fostering harmony, sustainability, and progress. In Jamaica, a nation blessed with abundant natural beauty, pristine coastlines, and lush landscapes, water serves as not only a source of life and livelihood, but also a catalyst for unity and citizen participation. Empowering young Jamaicans to actively participate in safeguarding the country’s water resources is not only a necessity, but a moral imperative if we are to remain the “land of wood and water” and prevent ‘water wars’ within, between and among communities. By harnessing the enthusiasm of Jamaica’s youth, we can catalyse a movement towards sustainable water management practices that will benefit both present and future generations. How? Through…

1. Education and Awareness: Knowledge is power. Schools, community centres, and youth organisations can play a vital role in organising activities focused on water conservation.

2. Community Engagement: Youth-led groups can spearhead community-based projects aimed at preserving local water sources.

3. Innovation and Technology: Young Jamaican innovators can develop sustainable solutions, such as rainwater harvesting systems, water-efficient irrigation techniques, and smart water management technologies.

4. Advocacy and Policy Influence: By raising their voices and advocating for policies that prioritise water conservation and sustainability, young Jamaicans can influence decision-makers. 5. Collaboration and Partnership: By forging partnerships with government agencies, nonprofit organisations, and private sector entities, young Jamaicans can amplify their impact and create lasting change.
