Ardent fan McGregor confident KC will lift title

ONE OF Kingston College’s (KC) most loyal supporters is former Senior Superintendent of Police Steve McGregor who graduated from the North Street, Kingston-based school in 1986.

McGregor, as usual, was clad in his full purple and white outfit as he mingled with his former schoolmates and friends inside the National Stadium yesterday on day four of the ISSA/GraceKennedy Boys and Girls’ Athletics Championships (Champs) to give his usual support. “I have been attending Champs since 1981 when I attended KC in first form and I have not missed a championships since,” said McGregor.

Although KC held just a slight six points lead over their rivals Jamaica College on Thursday, McGregor was very confident that his school will emerge easy winners on Saturday afternoon.

“We had some mishaps, so I was not surprised that Jamaica College was that close to us. They really performed well on Wednesday and Thursday. However, the last two days of the championships over the years have been our strongest days and we expect to stay in front and retain our title,” he said.

Next year KC will be celebrating the school’s 100th anniversary and McGregor stated that this year’s performance is a dress rehearsal for 2025.

“This year we are without a few of our top athletes who are injured but we will still dominate as we are using the performance this year as a dress rehearsal for our 100th anniversary,” said McGregor.

There are strong whispers at the meet that a young Calabar High team will be very strong next year and will spoil KC’s anniversary year plans but McGregor remains confident.

“I know people would love to spoil our anniversary victory but we are not fazed by this. We like when Calabar are our main rivals. The rivalry with Calabar is different (from that of Jamaica College) and special as since my days as a student at KC they (Calabar) have been the greater rivals. I want them to come very strong next year so we can beat them when they are at their best,” concluded McGregor who was in charge of security for many years at the championships.
