Scorpions facing defeat at Sabina Park

- Lennox Aldred/Gleaner Writer

ALL-ROUNDER JUSTIN Greaves has so far scored a resilient unbeaten half-century which could very well take the Leeward Islands Hurricanes to victory over the Jamaica Scorpions on today’s final day of their West Indies Championship match at Sabina Park.

When play begins today, the Hurricanes will resume on 145 for three and will require just another 42 runs for victory with Greaves well set on 62 and wicketkeeper Jahmar Hamilton on nine.

Earlier the Jamaica Scorpions added 137 runs to their overnight score of 59 for four. Opener Kirk McKenzie, who resumed on 24, managed to get to 33 before he fell leg before wicket to Rahkeem Cornwall at 85 for five. Six runs later, Peat Salmon was clean bowled by Jeremiah Louis for 22 and when Romaine Morris was run out without scoring, the writing was on the wall for a paltry score for the home side.

134 FOR EIGHT

Derval Green chipped in with a 30-ball knock of 19, but when he fell at 134 for eight things seemed to be going downhill swiftly for the home side. All-rounder Abhijai Mansingh and Ramaal Lewis had other ideas, however, as the pair breathed some life back into the innings with a dogged 58-run ninth-wicket stand.

Mansingh went on to score his second half-century of the season, but just as he got to 52, he slashed at Oshane Thomas and was caught behind.

Lewis was the last man to fall for a well-played 30, but the Scorpions could only manage to get 196 runs on the board which meant the Leewards needed under 200 runs to win the match.

Their reply didn’t get off to the kind of start they would have wanted as opener Kieran Powell went caught off Peat Salmon for nought with only two runs on the board.

Eight runs later, Keacy Carty got a beauty from Salmon and was bowled for four, but that would be the only wicket the Scorpions would get for some time, as opener Mikyle Louis and Greaves stuck in and added 105 runs for the third wicket.

Louis eventually fell to Ramaal Lewis for 57, but Greaves and Hamilton ensured that the Hurricanes were in the driver’s seat heading into day four.
