SEVEN MARKETS, including the Cross Roads and Coronation markets, are to be renovated by the Kingston and St Andrew Municipal Council at a cost of $25 million.

Newly appointed Mayor of Kingston and St Andrew Andrew Swaby made the announcement on Wednesday following a tour of the Cross Roads and Coronation markets, accompanied by a team including City Engineer Xavier Chevannes and Chief Executive Officer Robert Hill.

The mayor, who had previously complained about the deplorable conditions of markets and their sanitary conveniences, has pledged to find ways to improve the facilities while noting that most of its shoppers and vendors are females.

“It is very important that the KSAMC, under my leadership, look at this situation to see how best we can make their lives easier,” the mayor said.

Improving the markets i n the municipality is one of the critical areas t he new administration will focus on, as it seeks to improve critical infrastructure and amenities across the municipality. The council has emphasised that the markets are central to the effective function of the city and its economy.

Additionally, it notes that the undesirable conditions may have negative repercussions for the health and safety of vendors and shoppers.

Speaking earlier this month at his swearing-in ceremony at the KSAMC, Swaby said, “It pains my heart to visit the markets and to witness the deplorable conditions which exist and to which shoppers are exposed.

“It is shameful to see the conditions to which the public is subjected. This cannot continue, we must find solutions to improve these facilities and to make it habitable for all users.”

The KSAMC in the meantime plans to undertake a review of all markets across Kingston and St Andrew to determine the shortfall and request resources where required to improve the management and efficiencies.

“These establishments are critical to the city, hence resources will be requested and consultation held with all stakeholders to address the same,” the KSAMC promised.
