Jamaica to host training for joint CARICOM, Canada security task force
JAMAICA, IN partnership with Canada, will be hosting a joint contingency training exercise on the island from March 28 to April 26.
This will be a Jamaican led joint training exercise with CARICOM partners with the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF).
The exercise is expected to further enhance the preparations of designated CARICOM nations security forces for possible multi-national security operations within the Caribbean region.
“This initiative will see service personnel from the Jamaica Defence Force (JDF), Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF), Royal Bahamas Defence Force (RBDF) and Belize Defence Force (BDF) integrate into a CARICOM Joint Task Force (CJTF) construct, to train, plan, and conduct a wide range of scenario driven securitybased activities,” the JDF said in a statement.
“This integrated activity is the culmination of eight months of parallel training and coordination activities that have taken place across the region with the significant support of the governments of Canada and the United States of America.”
Canada has been a significant partner to the nations of the Caribbean for decades; particularly in the training of regional security personnel, and “EXERCISE TROGON SHIELD is yet another demonstration of this robust partnership between Canada and the nations of the region,” the JDF said.
Yesterday, the Permanent Council of the Organization of American States (OAS) said it will be asking member states and permanent observers to consider providing “immediate and adequate support to security forces in Haiti in order to restore conditions of peace and stability, through the dismantling of gangs and the urgent delivery of “massive humanitarian aid”.
The aim is to provide support for the transitional government in the wartorn French-speaking country, which was proposed by the Working Group on Haiti.
