Business community wants fixed election date

-

Warren McDonald, president of the Jamaica Chamber of Commerce, said that local government elections are not given the importance that they deserve.

“We have been postponing local elections for various reasons,” McDonald told THE STAR yesterday.

Local Government elections are to be held every three years. The elections were last held in March 2012, and have been postponed until no later than December 2016.

McDonald said that the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP), which forms the Government, must honour its election campaign promise to change the constitution to facilitate a fixed election date.

McDonald is also calling for term limits for prime ministers and mayors at the local government level.
