Sotomayor slams ‘Maneater’

SOTOMAYOR, a grey colt owned by David Miller and Stephan Narinesingh, lowered the colours of the previously unbeaten filly, SHE’S A MANEATER, to win the 105th running of the 1600 metres Jamaica 2-Y-O Stakes at Caymanas Park yesterday.

The 3-1 second choice, ridden by apprentice Linton Steadman for trainer Anthony Nunes, stormed past the 1-5 favourite 100 metres out to capture the final leg of the Supreme Ventures Triple Crown series for native-bred two-yearolds.

Yesterday’s defeat prevented the Wayne DaCosta-trained SHE’S A MANEATER from becoming only the second two-year-old to sweep the threerace series, a feat accomplished by the unbeaten PRINCESS POPSTAR in 2013.

BRIEF DUEL

SOTOMAYOR was held off the early pace in fifth as the DaCosta-trained pacesetter, MR UNIVERSE, led comfortably from MONEY MAGNET and SHE’S A MANEATER.

‘MANEATER’ went past MR UNIVERSE early in the straight, but was soon tackled by SOTOMAYOR, and after a brief duel, the Nunes-trained colt pulled away for a one-length win.

Nunes was, perhaps, the happiest man at Caymanas Park after his colt went past the winning post.

“I am elated, but I knew that Sotomayor was improving at a rapid rate and, having worked impressively and with the cheek pieces fitted for this race, I felt he had a good chance of winning at a mile.

“The plan was to have him earlier in the pace and he was never far off entering the straight. I knew then that his turn of foot would prove decisive late in the race,” said Nunes.
