Bike thief gets nine months behind bars

Ayoung man who was caught stealing a delivery man’s bike was slapped with a nine-month prison sentence when he appeared in the Kingston and St Andrew Parish Court yesterday.

Twenty-three-year-old Trevin Barrett pleaded guilty to the charge of larceny of a motor vehicle. The court heard that on the day of the incident, the complainan­t, who is a delivery man, parked his motorbike on Slipe Road, St Andrew, and went into Courts to conduct business.

PLEADED FOR LENIENCY

Upon exiting the business place, the complainan­t saw Barrett going down the road with his motorcycle. He, along with a police officer, gave chase and caught the culprit.

When asked why he should not go to prison for his crime, Barrett pleaded for leniency.

“I’m sorry. A the first me a do something like this. Me just a ask you kindly to make things work out fi me,” he said.

Upon handing down the nine-month prison sentence with a fingerprin­t order, presiding judge Judith Pusey admonished Barrett.

“Bike is not food. You can’t just go around teefing people things. If the police didn’t catch you, the man would be out of a job,” she said.
