... Mayor hails coach for Rusea’s daCosta Cup win

- KAVARLEY ARNOLD STAR Writer

Rusea’s old boy Lloyd ‘Bagga’ Stewart has the image of the 11-time daCosta Cup champions tattooed to his body. “This is a passionate town when it comes to football and Rusea’s keep everyone together with an achievement like this. People will take a day off to just come celebrate because it means a lot to the community,” said Stewart.

Rusea’s, on Saturday, lifted the ISSA/FLOW daCosta Cup, their first in six years, after a tactical come-frombehind 2-1 win over preseason favourites Clarendon College at the Montego Bay Sports Complex.

Lucea’s mayor Sheridan Samuels, who is a past student of Rusea’s, said the parish is grateful for what coach Vassell Reynolds has been able to achieve in his first year in charge of the team.

“Rusea’s is our heart and soul. Whenever they win, it is a Christmas for us. We are overwhelmed for what is happening and we must lift our caps to the coach for the type of work that he put in with a team people regarded as underdogs to come and lift this trophy for the people of Hanover. If I had the key to the city today, I would have given it to him,” said Samuels, who is also the president of the Hanover Football Association.

Reynolds said this trophy is a very personal one to him.

“I would have won a couple of trophies before this but, this one is special. The feeling is different very emotional as it’s a new group of people and I’ve gotten a warm welcome from the school community and the fans,” Reynolds said.
