Reynolds targets rural domination
Vassell Reynolds, coach of daCosta Cup champions Rusea’s High, underlined that their aim now is to become the most dominant school in rural area football next season. Reynolds outlined his ambitions after his team’s narrow 3-2 extra-time defeat to Jamaica College (JC) in the Olivier Shield competition on Saturday at the National Stadium.
“We are the defending champions of the daCosta Cup now and what we want to do now is to build a sound platform so that we can take off and be a powerhouse in the schoolboy arena, especially in the rural area,” said Reynolds.
“I know that it is going to be very difficult for us but we have to continue to get the players to play good football, and also to get them to play a lot more parish competitions in order to develop their talent,” Reynolds said.
He added that despite their failure to win the Olivier Shield against JC, he was very proud of his team’s achievements this season.
“The expectations are high and I know that this will motivate the entire support staff going forward and I hope this will motivate the players,” he said.
“We just have to organise ourselves and put in place a good structure going forward because we will retain 50 per cent of the players for next season,” said Reynolds.
Meanwhile, the veteran coach felt his team played well against JC despite the defeat.
“I thought overall it was a good game, but I am not disappointed due to the fact that we hung in there and fought gallantly,” Reynolds said.
“I thought that we need a bit more composure and I thought that senior players needed to display a bit more leadership and manage the game, but I am proud of the performance of my players,” he stated.
