Hopewell poised to get police post

-

HOPEWELL COULD soon have a police post as the police high command in the parish is now seeking to establish such a facility at the Hanover Municipal Corporation (HMC)-owned building, which houses the Electoral Office of Jamaica headquarters for eastern Hanover. Superintendent Sharon Beeput, who heads the Hanover police division, has approached the HMC for access to the property, which is considered ideal for a police post.

If the requisite access is granted, Beeput said the hope is to convert it into a police post as soon as possible.

The murder count in Hanover for 2017 (up to Friday) was at an unprecedented 57, four more than last year’s total.

Residents in Hopewell, arguably the largest population centre in the parish, have long been calling for a permanent police presence in the town.

“We are now seeing an increase in crime in Hopewell ... even recently, two wanted men from St James were found hiding out here,” said a resident of the town. “I am all for having a police post here.”

Beeput wrote a letter making her request to the HMC, which was read at last Thursday’s monthly meeting of the HMC by its CEO David Gardner.

“I am interested in securing the use of the property owned by the municipal corporation to be utilised as a police post to be operated on a 24-hour basis,” said Beeput’s letter. B.M.
