SUNSHINE GIRLS’ COACHES TO REMAIN
Sasher-Gaye Henry and Marvette Anderson are both likely to be handed contract extensions to continue in charge of the Sunshine Girls.
The duo, installed as interim coaches last August following the resignation of the Jermaine Allison-McCracken the previous month, oversaw Jamaica’s second-place finish at the Fast5 Netball World Series in Australia last October.
Netball Jamaica’s communications director, Wayne Lewis, said he did not anticipate any challenges with the pair continuing in the posts.
“I can’t imagine that there will be any issue around extending the coaches’ contracts because these coaches have certainly done well since they took over,” said Lewis.
“So I don’t see a reason why there will be any issue selecting these coaches.”
Allison-McCracken endured a strife-filled four months in charge of the Sunshine Girls, a combination of poor results and controversial fallouts with players.
She quit before her six-month probation period ended.
The contracts of Henry and Anderson expired at the end of last month, and Lewis said it was crucial Netball Jamaica sorted the matter quickly to ensure the national team’s preparation was not compromised.
“It is very important because it is a very integral part of the set-up in the preparations for the girls for the Commonwealth Games and the Quad series,” Lewis said.
“It is a pity that it has not been settled already in terms of confirming the coach.
“However, we have not met as a board since the annual general meeting in December, and we are looking forward to meeting, so we are just waiting on the president to set the date for the [continuation of last month’s] AGM in January in order for us to settle on this.”
Jamaica are the highest-ranked Caribbean nation in the world at fourth in the International Netball Federation rankings.
