Chambers, Bloomfield impress indoors
Two of the country’s outstanding junior representatives, Raheem Chambers and Akeem Bloomfield were very pleased after their impressive indoor openers for the University of Auburn on Saturday at the Commodore Invitational meet, held at the Vanderbilt Indoor Track in Nashville, Tennessee.
Chambers, the former St. Jago high sprinter – now a sophomore at Auburn, captured the men’s 60 metres in a personal best 6.62 seconds, getting the better of Rafael Scott of South Alabama, 6.74, with Georgia Tech’s Tyson Spears finishing third in 6.90 seconds.
Bloomfield, a former standout Kingston College quarter-miler, stopped the clock at 45.92 seconds for his win in the 400m. His teammate Randall Ceneus was second in 46.60 seconds with Asa Guevera of University of Texas, El Paso, logging a thirdplace finish in 47.82 seconds.
“After a year running indoors a season ago, I am more familiar with running the 60 metres and with my new personal best, which has me ranked second in the nation, I am really proud”, Chambers told STAR Sports.
“The new atmosphere here at Auburn is really good and I have adapted to the culture and the most important thing I have learnt since being at Auburn is time management,” added Chambers, who is expecting a great season both indoors and outdoors.
LATTER STAGE
A year ago, Bloomfield, who was once the country’s top-ranked male quarter-miler, was looking to qualify for the World Championships but got injured towards the latter stage of the season. However, the sophomore has put that behind him and is now looking forward to the year ahead.
“I did get injured last year and it did curtail my World Championships dream and played on my mind, but nothing remains the same as time is the master of all things. I was able to refocus and refresh my attitude and get back to the game in a new season. It was a good start to the season for me and I feel it is a step in the right direction. We don’t have an indoor track currently, so I am learning with each race,” Bloomfield said.
