Traffic head sends warning to stunt riders

Head of Operations in the Police Traffic and Highway Division Superintendent Courtney Coubrie is warning motorcyclists who do stunts on the road that the police will be on the look out for them.

“Anyone who is caught doing it and we lay hold on them, they will be arrested,” he told THE STAR.

Noting that the persons who do wheelies, stoppies, burnouts, and acrobatic stunts on the two wheelers are endangering themselves as well as the lives of other motorists and pedestrians, Coubrie said that they will be made to face the full brunt of the law.

HUGE FINES

The House of Representatives on Tuesday passed a new Road Traffic Bill, which, among other things, imposes a fine of $10,000 for the offence of doing wheelies. The Bill also contains provision for a $20,000 fine for the offence of having more than one passenger on a motorcycle.

Coubrie is also urging the bike riders to avoid driving on sidewalks.

“The road surface is what has been provided for them to use and it is an offence to ride on sidewalks or park on sidewalks,” he told THE STAR.

“Remember, we have very young pedestrians and we have the elderly, some of whom have become very senile. We have the roadway for vehicular traffic, so no vehicle should be using sidewalk,” he continued.

Coubrie says the public can expect to see the police force out in greater numbers conducting more traffic operations.
