I Atom hails ‘father’ Capleton
Reggae artiste I Atom is generating a huge buzz with her new collaboration single, ‘Ganja Call’, featuring dancehall star Capleton.
The song stresses the medicinal qualities and the healing powers of the marijuana plant. It was released on January 7.
“I did my version of the song first and I went to him to do a collaboration and he listened to the rhythm and liked it, and he wrote and recorded his verse to the rhythm same time. It was a spiritual connection (between she and Capleton),” I Atom said. “The marijuana plant is very powerful and this song is not only to entertain, but to educate the public about the many medicinal uses of this great plant.”
The artiste, who given name is Careen Hanchard, said Capleton is a person she looks up to for advice and said they have a great father-daughter relationship.
Two years ago, she walked away from her job as an agricultural extension officer in the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries and entered the music industry.
It was a leap of faith for her because she had initially resigned her job with the intention to migrate to the United States, where she planned to read for a master’s degree in agriculture, and then to pursue a job as an agricultural engineer. But the music bug bit her.
She was born in the Nine Miles area of St Ann. As a teenager, she attended Ferncourt High in the parish before matriculating to the College of Agriculture, Science and Education.
She did an internship at the Rural Agricultural Development Authority and three months later, landed a job at the agriculture ministry before divine intervention set her on the path to pursue a music career.
