ABOUT TIME? Lumsden hopes for lucky four
After losing on three previous occasions at the polls for the presidency of the Jamaica Basketball Association (JaBA), Major Clifton Lumsden said he is confident he will be successful at Sunday’s annual general meeting. Lumsden has twice lost to Ajani Williams and once to Dr Mark Broomfield in attempts to become the head of JaBA. Broomfield, who was elected in 2015, resigned from the post last September due to personal reasons.
“I am feeling very positive and very strong this time around,” said Lumsden. “I guess the people have understood this time around that the experimenting needs to stop, so I am confident that I will get the required support that I need to win on this occasion,” he said.
“It won’t be difficult this time because we have done the groundwork and we have done the discussions and the canvassing,” Lumsden pointed out.
Paulton Gordon and Kurt Comrie are the other candidates vying for the post.
Lumsden, president of the Business House Basketball Association, said if he is successful he plans to work with stakeholders within the sport to ensure basketball becomes attractive to young people.
“We have to improve the administration and we have to embark on a course of development. When we talk about development, we talk about the entire sport. We are not leaving any aspects of it behind,” he said.
“We are talking about the pillars and we are talking about the development of venues as well. We are talking about the capacity of the people, meaning the referees, coaches, managers and table officials,” Lumsden said.
Meanwhile Gordon, who has been involved with the sport for more than two decades, is a former executive member of JaBA. Comrie is a former member of JaBA’s marketing committee.
