Waterhouse’s Beckford hitting form at right time
When Kemar Beckford transferred from Rivoli United to Waterhouse FC ahead of the 2015/-016 Red Stripe Premier League (RSPL) season, he was considered a goalscoring machine. However, his arrival at Waterhouse coincided with a drop in his prolific strike rate, but this season the former national under-20 player has rediscovered his form in front of goal and has been one of the catalysts for Donovan Duckie’s Waterhouse revival.
In his first season he scored only twice, but ended with a respectable eight last season. And although he only started playing for Waterhouse during the second round of the RSPL, the 26-year-old Beckford netted his 11th goal of the season from the penalty spot in their comefrom-behind 2-1 win over Sandals at Drewsland. He believes his form has been a result of his hard work.
“I came into the league in the second round (this season), and I had to stay sharp. But it’s better than last season. I only came in the second round and I already have 11 goals. I have played less games and scored more goals than last season already,” he said.
MOTIVATION FROM FANS
His present motivation comes from the club’s demanding fans who want nothing other than victory. “These fans are dedicated and they need three points. They know what they can get from Kemar Beckford, and it’s a great feeling to please them. I told myself I have to bring my team to the top. Since I’ve come (from overseas), I have been giving them the victories,” he continued.
Although five goals off leading striker, Arnett Gardens’ Fabian Reid, the former Frazier’s Whip player has set his sights on catching the top scorer. After getting goals in back-to-back games, he is confident of making it three in a row against Portmore in their crucial rescheduled match today. “I am going for the leader, the leader is on 16 goals and I am on 11. The next game is Portmore United, so we have to work hard to get three points. So I am going for more goals in the Portmore game. Portmore are comfortable, so we will have to go there and just get that three points. I am the leading goalscorer for my team and they depend on me, so they will always get a goal from Kemar Beckford. I scored one last week and scored again this evening (last Sunday) and come Thursday, I am going for it again,” he said. –L.S.
