Cavalier look to beat relegated Boys’ Town
Portmore United sealed the $1 million incentive for the team that finished the Red Stripe Premier League (RSPL) preliminary stage on the most points, when they carved out a 20 win against FC Reno at Prison Oval yesterday.
Coach Shavar Thomas said he was elated with the achievement and noted that their attention is now fully focused on winning the title.
“We are elated, this was one of our objectives that we set out to achieve when we started the season, and now that we have achieved it, we are now focussing on our other objectives and moving forward. The next objective is to win the Premier League and become champions,” Thomas told STAR Sports.
Damano Solomon scored in the 43rd minute and Venton Evans netted in the 71st minute to push Portmore on to an unassailable 62 points.
With three rounds remaining, Portmore cannot be surpassed by any of the chasing teams in the 12-team league.
PLAY-OFF SPOT
Meanwhile, in tonight’s feature game, Cavalier will face off against relegated Boys’ Town at the Stadium East, starting at 8:35.
Cavalier are certainly expected to get the better of Boys’ Town, who were demoted to the Kingston and St Andrew Football Association (KSAFA) Super League next season.
The Rudolph Speid-coached Cavalier are battling for a top-six play-off spot in order to continue on the road for the RSPL Championship title.
A win for fifth-place Cavalier, who are on 43 points, would put them past fourth-place Waterhouse (44).
Cavalier will hunt victory through players such as captain Chevone ‘Messi’ Marsh, star midfielder Alex Marshall, Kaheem Parris, Paul Wilson, and Nicholas Hamilton.
However, Boys’ Town’s coach, Andrew Price, said that although his team is out, they won’t lie down and play dead.
“It should be an exciting game as it is a long-standing rivalry. But we will continue to be competitive and give a good account of ourselves until the season ends,” Price told STAR Sports yesterday.
“I think that we are buoyed by the win against UWI in the Jackie Bell last Thursday. The team should be high on confidence, so we are going there for a positive result,” he added.
Boys’ Town will rely on players such as national midfielder Jahmiel Hardware and veterans Daemion Benjamin, Michael Campbell, and Wayne Ellis.
