MORE PRICE ... Coach remaining at Boys’ Town, gets national appointment
Andrew Price, technical director of Boys’ Town, says he will remain as coach of the ‘Red Brigades’ following their demotion from the Red Stripe Premier League (RSPL) this season.
Price, who was recently appointed to Jamaica’s national women’s programme, warned his critics that he is not going anywhere, despite the club being booted from the top flight after struggling to stay up in each of the last three seasons.
“I am still the head coach of Boys’ Town. (I am) Definitely looking forward to next season. Yes, I will stay, as the board of directors have made their decision and I will be the coach of the senior team. We understand that we want to make one move back to the Premier League and we have got some commitments from the players. The work continues,” Price said.
LACK OF SPONSORSHIP
Meanwhile, Price says that it is important for the local women’s league to resume after it was not played last season because of lack of sponsorship.
Price was appointed by the Jamaica Football Federation (JFF) on February 28, with responsibility for the preparation of the local-based players, who will be part of the squad for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers in May.
Price said that he is already looking at a cadre of local players who were called to training camps at the UWI-JFF Captain Horace Burrell Centre of Excellence over the last two weeks.
“It is a short time but we will do our best. We have started the scouting process as it was our second weekend that we had the players in training camps. We have players overseas in universities, so the local girls will complete the supplement of players. Coaches Hue Menzies and Donaldson know those players so it is about putting the best players out there that can represent the country. I have seen some talent in the country,” he said.
“We must bear in mind that we have not had a league in the past two seasons. The players that we have seen over the last two weeks can play football. It is imperative that we start back our senior league so that we can develop the players. We cannot lay to waste the talent, so it is imperative that we get the league back on track. The good thing is that there is the schoolgirl league but a lot of those players will be with the junior teams. And, some will matriculate into the senior programme. It is important that a competition is put in place,” added Price.
Price was the head coach of the National Women’s Beach team that won a silver medal at the Youth Commonwealth Games in The Bahamas in 2017.
