Let’s celebrate our women

-

March 8 is International Women’s Day, a celebration of the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women.

It’s not hard to see that there have been quite a few achievements by women, especially in the last generation.

While I, personally, am happy to be living in a world where women are able to choose our own fate, I am aware that there is still much that we are trying to achieve. At this point, I will not detail these deficiencies. Rather, I want to take a moment to really celebrate what we have achieved so far.

So, here are some ideas for showing the women in your life that you really appreciate them on International Women’s Day.

SAY THANK YOU

Women are the hardest workers and support systems of most families. They take care of everything for everyone. The house is clean, and there’s food. She’s the nurse, the cheerleader, the sounding board, and so much more. Unfortunately, even with all she does, it can be a thankless job, because it’s taken for granted that she will always be there. So, do something to show your gratitude to your spouse, mother, sister, or friend — any woman — for her continued support.

SUPPORT HER BUSINESS

Many entrepreneurs in Jamaica are women. Women are always coming up with ways to start a business, no matter the size, and support their family. Women do not only own businesses, they are also running them; Jamaica has the most female managers per capita. The fact is that once she succeeds, her family also benefits. So, support her. Spend money in her business.

GIVE HER A DAY OFF

Some women are so busy looking out for everyone else that they forgetsto take a moment for themselves. Sometimes, she simply doesn’t have the help she needs to facilitate a day off. You can fix this. Help her by freeing her up so that she can take some time to relax, rejuvenate, and take a few minutes to do something fun.

CONGRATULATE HER

A woman is constantly working hard to be better. She’s furthering her studies, nurturing those around her, building her business. She’s always on a quest to improve herself and, eventually, those around her. Celebrate her. Show her that you see her hard work and that you appreciate her.

Of course, there are people who will say things like “We don’t need an International Women’s Day. Women are celebrated every day”. I don’t pay attention to those people, because usually, those are the people who never do anything to celebrate the women in their lives on ordinary days.

Regardless of what you think about International Women’s Day, women are the engine of the world. When we win, the world wins. So, let’s do more to treat our women better. And to all the women reading this article: Thank you, and happy International Women’s Day!
