Rhodes Hall’s Williams fancies his chances in 400m hurdles

-

Two weeks after finishing second to Maliek James-King of Calabar High over 400 meters hurdles at the Carifta Trials, Rhodes Hall High’s Rovane Williams returned at last Saturday’s Digicel Grand Prix Finals to turn the tables on his rival.

Williams is aware that winning the Class One 400m hurdles will only get tougher at the ISSA/GraceKennedy Boys and Girls’ Championships with the experienced and multitalented Jauavney James of St Elizabeth Technical, an athlete who defeated him at last month’s Western Championships, in the mix. “On that day, it is who wants it the most so I will just have to go out and execute and perform as I did in the Digicel Grand Prix,” said Williams.

BEST PLACING

Rhodes Hall’s track team had their best placing of 18th at Champs in 2016, with 12 points, but had a disappointing 2017 campaign. However, coach Rhoando Parchment said they are looking to get into the top 10 at this year’s championships. “That (bettering the 2016 performance) is exactly one of our main objectives this season as we are aiming to get up to the top 10. The boys have been working and we a looking to create some upsets on the track,” said Parchment.

Parchment also pointed out that he expects his standout athletes to get quality points with great performances.

“We are hoping to pick up over 20 points. They should, of course, come from Rovane (Williams), C-Jay (Whyte), Moneesh (Vassell). We also have a young man (Nickoy Harding), who is among the top runners in middle distance running. We are also expecting a big run from the 4x400m open team,” said Parchment.

“There is still room for improvement in terms of our other sprinters, who did well at Western Champs, but due to some injuries, they have been out of competition. They are close to full fitness at this point so come next week they should be ready,” he added.
