Major crimes decreasing in Trelawny
Superintendent Dwight Powell, head of the Trelawny Police Division, says the men and women under his command will be moving to ensure that the decline in major crimes in the parish continues in that direction.
“From our intelligence gathering, we know that there are two gangs operating in the parish, one in Falmouth and the other in Bunkers Hill,” he said, while addressing members of the clergy, including volunteer chaplains at the Falmouth Police Station recently. “We are into operations which will soon control the activities of these gangs, and this will see a further decrease in the level of crimes in the parish.”
Five murders have been committed since the start of 2018, but none so far for the month of March. There were 21 homicides in the parish last year.
According to Powell, the police are focused on seven major crimes, including murder, shooting, robbery, rape, aggravated assault, break-ins, and larceny.
Rapes and break-ins have increased. However, he was quick to note that more rape cases are being reported because the relationship between citizens and the police has improved.
Powell claims that the breakins are being committed by criminals who have migrated to the parish and have turned to this type of crime to maintain their lifestyles.
