Captain Kevona? Edwin Allen principal believes star athlete has traits to lead school next season
Dr Everton Walters, principal of the reigning ISSA/GraceKennedy Girls’ Athletics Champions Edwin Allen High School, said that star sprinter Kevona Davis has the necessary qualities to become the captain of the school’s track and field team next year.
Walters told STAR Sports in an interview that the 16-year-old Davis has demonstrated many good qualities both on and off the track. Therefore, she could become the leader of the team next season.
Davis, who withdrew from Jamaica’s Carifta Games team last week due to a sore hamstring, broke the Class 2 Girls’ 100m and 200m records at Champs this year.
“Kevona Davis’ performance will lift the team going forward because she is a role model, and team members look up to her highly, so I see her possibly being the captain next year,” said Walters.
“Kevona is highly respected among her peers, and not only her peers, but nationally and internationally, and those who know of her respect her. She has that sort of claim to be a champion athlete of great performances, so I believe that she will impact us in a positive way,” Walters said.
UNDUE PRESSURE
But her coach, Michael Dyke, said that he would rather not place any undue pressure on his athlete, who will still be in Class 2 next season, so soon.
The Clarendon-based Edwin Allen tallied 326 points to win their fifth straight title and sixth overall. They were closely followed by Hydel High School, who finished second with 289, then Holmwood Technical, third with 285, and St Jago High School, 178.
Walters said that this year’s championships was pretty close. Therefore, they will be pulling out all stops to ensure that they retain their title next year. “I have seen where schools have been putting in the work, and they are building their programmes, and we can’t take it for granted that things will work the way the way that they have worked over the past years,” Dr Walters said.
“We recognise that Hydel is coming, and Holmwood are doing exceptionally well, so we have to put in the work and ensure that we do what we have to do to maintain this championship,” he said.
