The Department of Correctional Service says it supports the investigation by the police into reports that Michael McLean, while in custody left 19 times to engage in sexual activities.

Director of Public Prosecutions Paula Llewellyn said on Thursday that a high-level police investigation is under way into reports that murder convictions are able to leave his high-security prison several times to engage in sexual activities while he awaited trial.

McLean, 50, has been given six life sentences for slaughtering six members of a St Thomas family in 2006.

NINETEEN OCCASIONS

He has been ordered to serve 60 years in prison before he becomes eligible for parole, but effectively should serve another 48 years since he has been in custody for the past 12 years.

Throughout his murder trial, McLean repeatedly requested to speak with officials at the Independent Commission of Investigations, saying he wanted to hand over proof that during the 12 years he was in custody awaiting trial, he was taken to several guest houses on 19 occasions to have sex with various women.

“In the 12 years I have been in custody, I have dated two teachers and a secretary,” McLean said on the second day of the trial.

Llewellyn said police investigators are trying to determine the accuracy of the claims.
