Ayreonna Grubb, a Grade 10 industrial technical student of the William Knibb Memorial High School in Trelawny, recently achieved third place in the national Toyota Dream Car Art Contest 2018.

She has also been entered in the upcoming global competition, which could see her winning a trip to Japan.

Grubb, 15, received a number of prizes during an award ceremony held at the school. Her prizes included a computer tablet, wireless headphones and a book voucher valued at J$7,500.

“I’m excited but also nervous because I’m going up against the entire world, and I’m happy I got third place,” Grubb said. “I didn’t know I would have won because other students from the school entered the competition, but when I heard my name, I got excited. It’s the first competition I’ve ever won.”

The national contest was held between October 2017 and March 2018 under the theme, ‘Your Dream Car’.

Participants used crayons, markers, colouring pencils, and watercolours to create handdrawn illustrations of their ideas for cars.

Over 90 children took part, competing in the seven-andbelow category, the eight-to11 category, and the 12-to-15 category.

Lorna Jackson, principal of William Knibb High School, had high praise for Grubb’s performance.

“Art is not one of the things we’re usually known for because we usually do essay competitions, music, and sports. This is something else to add to the list, and we are very happy for Ayreonna,” said Jackson.

The global competition will be held between April and May. The winners will travel to Japan with their parents or guardians to attend the final award ceremony in August.
