Sixty years of fostering love

- GEORGE HENRY STAR Writer

Despite heavy showers, persons were not about to miss the 60th wedding anniversary celebration for Reginald and Hortense Foster at the Sanguinetti New Testament Church of God on Sunday, May 6.

Many words of love were shared by those who were asked to speak during the lengthy programme, especially by the three moderators who the Fosters asked to chair the various segments.

Minister Denise JohnsonKnight, while bringing greetings, pointed out that she has known the Fosters all her life and has grown to love and respect them as man and wife and Christian leaders of example.

She added that the Fosters have been very close friends of her family and have always treated her like their own daughter.

She said that the couple must have lasted this long because of the love of God and the abundance of love they have for each other. The Fosters, who got married on April 30, 1958, were showered with wonderful words by their son, Hugh.

“Had it not been for my mother and father, I would not have been around. I have seen them as my natural hero and heroine,” said Foster.

DISCIPLINARIANS

To the couple’s daughter, Paulette Mastin, they have always been disciplinarians who never spared the rod. She said that her parents always administered punishment with love.

Bishop Donald Dawson, who has been working with the Fosters for the past three years, described them as a blessed couple who he loves and respect.

He added that the Fosters have been an inspiration to all married couples, a living example of love for all to see.

Retired Bishop Osmond Taylor, who presided over the exchange of rings, expressed that the milestone is a hallmark that deserves the highest commendation.

“Sixty years is a long time where marriage is concerned. It is love, especially agape love, which is the bedrock of the Fosters’ marriage. They have set a noble example for all looking on,” said Bishop Taylor.

Pastor Callis Thompson said that marriage is the only institution that God compares to His Church.

“When persons get married, they should be managers of their marriage. They should keep it together. They should be skilful managers to keep it intact. You need to make your marriage attractive. The Fosters’ marriage is wrapped up in love, hence, it is attractive to others,” said Thompson.

Reginald was 26 and Hortense just 18 when they got married. The union has produced five children, two of whom are now deceased.
