Cop tries to sell stolen car
Head of the Jamaica Constabulary Force’s (JCF) Inspectorate of Constabulary (IOC), Senior Superintendent Clinton Laing, says if a single police officer breaks the law, it damages the perception of the force.
“In my opinion, one rogue cop is too many. It affects the image,” he told THE STAR.
He noted that as soon as rogue cops are identified, the necessary disciplinary actions are taken.
His assertions come after a police constable was arrested on Thursday for reasonable suspicion of larceny of a motor vehicle in Spanish Town, St Catherine.
According to reports, at about 1:45 p.m. on Thursday, the policeman, who is attached to the St James Police Division, was in the process of selling a Nissan AD Wagon.
However, the prospective buyer became suspicious during the transaction when discrepancies were discovered with the documents allegedly registered to the vehicle.
The police were called, and an investigation revealed that the vehicle was reported stolen in Portmore, St Catherine, on June 14.
The motor car was seized, and the policeman was taken into custody.
Although disappointed, Laing said that the matter would be thoroughly investigated.
“The bottom line is that we hope that it would be an isolated case. One is not good, but I can tell you from where I sit that we do thorough investigations to find out if there are any linkages and if there are any of our other colleagues who might be so involved. And if others are identified, the necessary reports will be written and sent to the Director of Public Prosecution for some advice,” Laing explained.
