Challengers repeat as Masters League champs

Philmore Thompson’s hattrick led Challengers’ defence of their Michael/Keith Thorpe Western Masters League title on Sunday, defeating Faithfull Masters 3-0 at Jarrett Park.

Thompson’s brilliance came alive in the second half with 53rd-, 69th- and 74th-minute strikes.

Former FIFA football referee Steve Buckner, whose trophy is still one of which the teams play for, told the WESTERN STAR after the game that he admires the Masters League and will continue to help out in whatever way possible.

“Masters League has been good for the parish because the youngsters will see quality football from the persons who would have been around for a long time. Even at this age, the quality of football is good because the older the guys, the more methodical they play. So it is not physical running but the ball doing most of the work, and this is what I love with the masters,” said Buckner, who is also a former international cricket umpire.

Coordinator Bryan Miller said the 11-team St James competition, which is celebrating 25 years, provides a good competitive atmosphere for players over the age of 35.

“Montego Bay produced a whole lot of top footballers and usually, by the time they reach 30 to 35, they are no longer as competitive ... . However, they would still want the exercise and to play competitive football,” said Miller.
