Hyundai Motor Company, the official partner of the 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia, has teamed up with multiplatinum Grammy Award-winning band Maroon 5 to pay tribute to reggae legend Bob Marley by covering his hit song ‘Three Little Birds’ for its new brand campaign.

Head of Marketing Division at Hyundai, Minsoo Kim, said Hyundai has had a long-standing history with football as they have been sponsors of FIFA since 1999.

He said that for the Russia World Cup, Hyundai wanted to encourage football fans to forget about their worries and enjoy the games as much as possible and believed Three Little Birds’ was the song to help bring off that message.

“For the 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia, Maroon 5’s modern take on Three Little Birds tells people to forget their worries, reflecting Hyundai’s new brand campaign, ‘Hyundai exists to enhance everyday lives with quality time’, which informs customers about using our smart technology to keep safe and worry free while on the roads,” he said.

Speaking on their opportunity to cover Marley’s song, Maroon 5’s members dubbed the reggae legend a creative genius and said they were happy to have got the opportunity to do the song.

“Bob Marley is one of the greatest artistes in the history of music; he is truly a genius, so we were excited to be given the opportunity to cover Three Little Birds for Hyundai’s new campaign,” the band said.

Marley’s inclusion was not only based on his music but also his love for football. According to the article on Hyundai’s official website, Marley was a fan of football legend Pele.

The article also quoted Marley saying football is freedom when he said: “Football is a whole skill to itself. A whole world. A whole universe to itself. Me love it because you have to be skilfully to play it! Freedom! Football is freedom.”
