Pastor lashes JCF at murdered cop’s funeral

- LEON JACKSON STAR Writer

Aclergyman in Trelawny on Saturday expressed dismay that slain policeman Deron Henry was not given an official funeral.

Henry, 38, who was on suspension, was killed on May 22 along Waterloo Road in St Andrew. He was working as a security guard.

“God must have mercy on those who used their pens to keep Deron on suspension for five years, without pay, and even when exonerated, refuse to give him an official funeral. In other words, when you die they forget you. That is tantamount to murder,” Reverend Devere Nugent said at Henry’s funeral on Saturday.

The funeral was held at the William Knibb Baptist Church in Trelawny.

“Something must be wrong when, in recruiting, this institutional giant can carry out its antecedents to ensure that the right person is enlisted, yet shortly after, this officer who came up clean, is hounded by INDECOM and dragged before the courts. Somewhere in all of this something is wrong.”

A tribute from Commissioner of Police Major General Antony Anderson was printed in the funeral programme. It read: “We have lost a beloved son, brother, friend, colleague and public servant. He was a courageous and true professional, a trusted associate and a dear friend who gave 16 years and two months of committed, exemplary and courageous service.”

Henry’s sister, Juline, remembered him for the love he gave to his parents.

“He was a good brother, father, son, and friend. He was ambitious and desired to serve his country. He was shot and killed while moonlighting as a security officer, because he was on suspension without pay and had to care for his children. Thank God he was freed of the corruption charge,”

she said.
