- ROBERT BAILEY STAR Writer

If England should beat Croatia in their World Cup semi-final match tomorrow, the streets of Maverley would be engulfed in euphoria like they would in London.

The northwest St Andrew community is as invested in the results of the match as Londoners because one of their natives, Raheem Sterling, is donning the number 10 shirt for the Three Lions at this World Cup.

Sterling’s presence at the World Cup has been a source of joy for the community.

Proudly displaying her England’s number 10 jersey in her frontyard in the community, Yvonne Foster said the entire community is overwhelmed and proud of Sterling’s performance at the FIFA World Cup thus far.

Foster told STAR Sports that the jersey was given to her by Sterling on one of his recent visits to the island, and so she and other members of community are proud of the forward’s performance at World Cup.

“I think he is performing excellently and we are feeling so proud of him,” said Foster.

“He is a product of Maverley and he was born here and he went away when he was a five-yearold and we have come to love him,” she said.

Foster added that Sterling has done a lot for the community because he has helped to send a lot of kids to school.

“The community is inspired by him because all the Brazil,

BArgentina and Germany fans are saying England because of him and so we are very proud of him,” Foster said. Krishna Goldson, who has described himself as a diehard Brazil fan, said Sterling’s performance at the World Cup has helped to inspire a lot of youths in the community.

“We are very proud of him because he has given the youths in Maverley a big upliftment,” Goldson said.

“Jamaica didn’t make it to the World Cup and so I am feeling very proud that Sterling is there representing for us in here Maverley and as Jamaicans,” he said.

Another resident, Timoy Booth, who sells jelly in the tough northwest St Andrew community, said that he is very delighted with performances at the tournament, and he is hoping that England can go on to win the World Cup.

“We are proud of him because he is a Jamaican and him is a Maverley man and for him to make it to the semi-finals is big for the community,” said Booth.

“Everybody feel proud and happy for him and we feel that they are going to go to the final and win the World Cup,” said Booth, while displaying his England flag.
