New director of elections appointed

Water supply disruption for St Elizabeth Investment paying off for Jamaica

-

Glasspole Brown has been appointed director of elections. He replaces Orrette Fisher, who resigned in March. The Electoral Commission of Jamaica (ECJ) said Brown, who is currently acting as director of elections, served meritoriously for nine years as assistant director of elections.

“Mr Brown is a fine son of this Jamaican soil and each of the other commissioners and I wholeheartedly recommend his appointment as director. I am satisfied that the Electoral Office of Jamaica is in good hands,” said Dorothy Pine-McLarty, chairman of the ECJ.

The National Water Commission (NWC) is advising customers who are served by the Hounslow facility in St Elizabeth, that they will experience a disruption in their water supply on Saturday, July 14, between the hours of 8 a.m. and 7 p.m., and on Sunday, July 15, between the hours of 6 a.m. and 7 p.m.

The NWC said the disruption is to facilitate pipeline interconnection work. Bigwoods, Bethany, Beacon, Short Hill, Hounslow, Newell, Claremont Park, Horeswood and Menzie Lane will be affected.

Minister of Finance and the Public Service Dr Nigel Clarke says investment in Jamaica is headed in the right direction. “According to data provided by the Bank of Jamaica, for fiscal years 2016-17 and 2017-18 the average foreign direct investment (FDI) was 20 per cent higher than average FDI over the fiscal years 2012-13 to 2015-16,” said the minister, who is in Frankfurt, Germany, leading a delegation on the European leg of Jamaica’s Investor roadshow.

“FDI fluctuates on a year-over-year basis and, by definition, FDI can be lumpy with oneoff anomalies. To get a better picture of the trend or the direction of FDI, it is better to look at averages over periods of time. Averages smooth out one – off aberrations. The latest trend shows that FDI is moving in the right direction, this period being 20 per cent higher than the previous,” Clarke emphasised.
