Hundreds expected for Jericho reunion

- BRYAN MILLER STAR Writer

The district of Jericho in Hanover will be buzzing with activities from August 3 to 6 as the community will be staging its ninth biennial reunion over that period. Hundreds of persons from across Jamaica and the diaspora, who originated from that small farming district, will be making the trip back home, like a pilgrimage, to meet, greet, socialise and reminisce among themselves on their humble beginnings, and share experiences on how they have managed to overcome life’s challenges.

The week of activities is being staged under the theme ‘Investing in the next generation’, with daily and nightly activities taking place throughout the district.

The activities, which have the blessings of the Hanover Police Division, start on Friday, August 3, at 3 p.m. with a welcome home reception in the village square.

Villagers from the district and surrounding areas, along with the returnees from home and abroad, will gather for a meet and greet.

The following day, an ‘old-time concert’ will be held in the village square from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m.

On Sunday, all roads will lead to the Campbell Memorial United Church of Jamaica and Grand Cayman in the district for the official church service at 11 a.m.

At 2 p.m., the highlight of the week is a dinner for all the senior citizens at the Tryall Hotel.

“The senior citizens’ dinner is very special to us, as we use it to recognise all our unsung heroes from within the district and say thanks to them for their guidance throughout our lives,” secretary of the Homecoming Planning Committee, Glenda Miller, told WESTERN STAR.

She added that the dinner has its own theme, ‘You rock our world’, adopted as a tribute to the seniors for their contributions to the community.

The activities on Sunday will culminate with a gospel concert in the village square from starting at 7 p.m., while on Monday, August 6, Independence Day, the activities will come to a close with a family fun day from 6 a.m. to 9 a.m. at the Jericho Primary School, and an old-hits party, starting at 6 p.m. on the school compound.
