The great thing about growing up

-

Jamaica is celebrating 56 years of Independence, and apart from completely enjoying all the festivities, it has me feeling a little pensive. I have been thinking about my life now and how it compares to all the plans I had for myself when I was a teenager.

It’s clear when I compare the plans my younger self had for me to where I have ended up in life that I had no idea about anything and I was so wrong.

It’s amazing how different I have become from the naïve place that I started out. I have always been very decisive in my life.

From a very young age, I knew I wanted to travel the world. As a matter of fact, when I was asked what I wanted to be when I grow up, my answer was always a tourist.

I wanted to travel the world and experience different cultures on my amazing TV show.

Well, clearly, that didn’t work out, but my desire to see the world has not changed; that’s a goal I’m still trying to achieve.

When it came to love and relationships, I didn’t really have any definitive plans for my life.

I was never the person who dreamt of getting married, having children, getting the perfect house and making a home.

PROUDEST ACHIEVEMENT

The thing I’m most proud of in my life and what I have achieved thus far is the understanding that I have gained through paying closer attention to my health and lifestyle.

My whole worldview changed because I started to see food differently and made a conscious decision to change my life.

Everything has changed as a result – my health has drastically improved, I enjoy my body in ways that I never knew were possible, and I am, overall, so happy because of this decision.

As I ponder on Jamaica’s Independence and I see where we are as a country, I think that Jamaica, like me, had great dreams as a young country and has achieved much, but still has much work to do.

As a Jamaican, I am so proud to be a part of this little island with this big impact on the world. Of course, there is much work to be done, but I wouldn’t want to be from anywhere else.

So happy Independence, Jamaica!
