Hanover gets its first farm queen
Today Samantha Thomas Myrie is wearing a big smile as she has accomplished what she had set out to do, give Hanover its first National Farm Queen.
Myrie said she was confident that she could pull it off as she was well prepared and powered by the desire to make not just herself proud, but the parish manager, parish and all her supporters.
“Knowing that my parish was the only parish that didn’t win, I knew that I had to win to ensure that our parish won at least one time,” she said.
Leading up to the competition, she described it as a rigorous process as she had to write a technical paper and presented on the same topic as well as write a talent piece on it.
A member of the Happy Produce Limited family-operated business which is engaged in contract farming, Myrie said her ultimate dream is to be a great land scientist and one who is flexible enough to inspire young people to venture into agriculture.
“It is the only discipline that has every bit of occupation in it and it is the best,” she said with a smile.
As far as Myrie is concerned, there could be no other career for her as farming totally completes her.
She said the best thing about it is the discipline it takes to engage in it.
She said persons coming into farming must be prepared to be disciplined and committed.
“If you don’t have those qualities, it (farming) will bring you down and into debt and it won’t be beneficial to you,” she said.
Myrie, who gives her time to the 4-H movement, said she is motivated to see children actively involved in agriculture and it’s for that reason she always tells her clubbites: “Don’t blend in, just stand out”.
“Don’t try to be like everyone else just be the best you can possibly be,” said Myrie, who also wants to sees more women in farming.
