Miller rejects top clubs’ advances
UWI ace striker Ryan Miller has shunned several top Red Stripe Premier League (RSPL) clubs to remain with the university team for the upcoming 2018/19 RSPL season.
The former St Georges’ College star player was wanted by former champions Arnett Gardens and Waterhouse but opted to remain at UWI despite the departure of coach Marcel ‘Fuzzy’ Gayle to Waterhouse.
“I was approached by two top clubs. However, I will stay at UWI. I started preseason last week, and I have seen a lot of the players back in training. All the rumours about the players leaving are not true,” Miller told STAR Sports yesterday.
“I still have a contract with UWI. I signed a three-year deal last December, and the structure has not changed. Coach Gayle has gone to Waterhouse, but Andrew Peart was the assistant, and he conducted a lot of training sessions, so he knows the system.”
Miller transferred from Cavalier to UWI last season and has scored 12 goals for the tertiary institution. In the Golden Boot race, he finished behind RSPL 201718 top scorer Craig Foster, Javon East and Fabian Reid.
“My goal is for UWI to be in the top six and take it from there, and I want to continue scoring goals in order to help my team. The Golden Boot is not my target, but if it comes, I will accept,” Miller said.
UWI finished just outside the play-off zone last season.
Miller, who was a staple in the national set-up as a junior, is also eyeing a call-up to the senior Reggae Boyz squad in the future.
“Representing the national senior team is still my dream, but that is not in my control, the coach will have to call me. But I will continue to work hard and see where it takes me,” the 21-year-old concluded.
