Amputee to get back on her feet

-

Safoy Fearon, the Steer Town, St Ann, resident who lost all of the toes on her right foot and suffered a pelvic fracture after she was struck by a truck which pinned her in a building for several minutes last year, is getting back on her feet.

The young woman will be fitted with a state-of-the-art prosthetic limb in a matter of weeks, thanks to Surgix Jamaica Limited.

The company, which provides quality surgical products and services, will be providing the prosthetic limb to Fearon at a substantially reduced price.

“I am grateful that they are helping me because I got to buy the leg at a reduced price. After they saw the article, they worked out something and gave me a price, and then they took something off of that again. So I am really happy,” Fearon told THE STAR

This newspaper told the heartrending story of the young woman in April. The article was headlined: ‘I need a leg – Accident victim seeks help’.

“At first, when it was published, people would call and say they are helping, and then after two weeks I hear nothing from them so I just stop following it up,” she said. “One and two people send small donations to me and I am very grateful.”

Fearon was no longer able to work as a result of the accident.

Winfield Boban, Surgix Jamaica Limited’s CEO, said that after Fearon’s case was brought to his company’s attention, his team had to help.

“We are on a mission to make a difference in the lives of amputees in Jamaica, one patient at a time,” Boban said. “Here is somebody who can’t find help anywhere. Her best bet is, hopefully, somebody taking her outside of Jamaica so she can get assistance overseas, and that does not happen every week.

“She is a young, productive individual who is going to be stuck for the rest of her life, unless she gets a prosthetic limb,” the Surgix CEO said, adding that sourcing the prosthetic limb and facilitating her fitting at an affordable rate is at the heart of his company’s mission.

Fearon, who was a chef at the Melia Braco Hotel before the accident, said “getting a prosthetic leg will mean I will be able to go back to work”.
