Richie Innocent continues to push forward with poetry. The easy-going dub poet is currently on a promotional tour of the US in support of his upcoming EP titled ‘I Am Special’. Last Saturday, he delivered an impressive performance at the Sol Food and Music Festiva,l which took place at the Malcolm X Memorial Foundation in Omaha, Nebraska. During his set, he delighted the audience with poems such as Community, Monster, Love (Where are You) and Good Old Days.
“Dub poetry in Jamaica has taken on a new energy, and it’s catching on overseas as well. I was invited to this event which is an offshoot of the Dis Poem Words and Agro Festival, which is an annual event in Jamaica. I had a great time at the event, my performance was warmly received; big up to Ras Takura and Shomari and the Wakanda One family for making it possible,” said Richie Innocent.
This Saturday, Richie Innocent is scheduled to perform at the second staging of National Spoken Word Awards at the Studio Movie Grill theatre in Chicago.
“I’ve been nominated in the International Poet of the Year category. I’m also scheduled to perform at this prestigious event,” he said.
The awards show is an annual event that is organised by the Chicago-based spoken word organisation called People of Extraordinary Talent.
Richie Innocent is a member of the organisation and its ambassador in Jamaica.
He is also booked to perform at several other events in Chicago before the end of the tour, including the annual Marcus Garvey Celebrations, the African Celebration, and the Spoken Word Open Mic event.
I Am Special is slated to be released in November.
