Powell shines but Tallawahs fall to Patriots

-

DESPITE AN aggressive 84 runs knock by Rovman Powell, the Jamaica Tallawahs lost by seven wickets (Duckworth/Lewis) to Chris Gayle’s St Kitts and Nevis Patriots, in a rain-affected Caribbean Premier League contest at Warner Park in Basseterre.

Powell led the way as the Tallawahs piled on 206/6 in their 50 overs, but Gayle, who slammed 41 runs from 24 balls (6 fours, 2 sixes) and Rassie van der Dussen, who got 45 from 24, led the Patriots to their revised target of 118 with the loss of three wickets and five balls to spare.

The Tallawahs struck early when Oshane Thomas bowled Evin Lewis for a duck with the score on 18, but Gayle and van der Dussen took the total to 71, before the Jamaican star was removed, caught by Kennar Lewis off the bowling of Krishmar Santokie in the sixth over. Adam Zampa got rid of Ben Cutting a couple balls later without any addition to the score, but van der Dussen and Mahmudullah, who scored 28 runs, saw the Patriots safely to their revised target.

EARLY TROUBLE

Sent in to bat by the Patriots, the Jamaicans earlier found themselves in early trouble when Johnson Charles (13 runs) was caught by Alzarri Joseph off the bowling of Fabian Allen, the 23-year-old Jamaican at the top of the third over with the score on 22.

Kennar Lewis made nine runs before he was sent back to dugout with the score on 42 before opener Glenn Phillips, who struck an impressive even 40 off 29 balls via six fours and a six, was trapped lbw by Joseph in the 10th over, with the Tallawahs on 81 runs. Powell and David Miller then put on 79 for the fourth wicket to set up the Tallawahs massive total before Miller fell for 32. Skipper Andre Russell went for one run after being run out, while Powell followed two balls later, bowled by Ben Cutting in the penultimate over. Cutting was the pick of the Patriots’ bowlers getting 2 for 29 with Allen, Carlos Brathwaite and, Joseph getting a wicket apiece.
