Edwards expects Denham Town fireworks

- ROBERT BAILEY STAR Writer

Having failed to reach to the second round of the Manning Cup competition last season, Omar Edwards, coach of Denham Town High School, says his team is much better prepared this season and is expecting them to put on a good showing this season. The west Kingston-based school reached the quarter-finals of the competition in 2016. However, they failed to repeat that feat last season. Edwards, who has been coaching Denham Town for the past four seasons, told STAR Sports that they are much better prepared this season, and he is confident that they will do well.

“Yes, you could call us a dark horse because last season we did not do as well as we would have wanted,” said Edwards.

“However, we have gained massive experience from the last campaign, and I believe that we should be a better bunch going into the Manning Cup this season,” he said.

POSITIVE ATTITUDE

“We have a few players with the experience and with the know-how and it is for us to keep them motivated and ensure that they have a positive attitude. I believe that we can give it a good run this season,” Edwards said.

He added that his players have set out big career goals because they aspire to play for the national team.

“We have players who want to at least when Manning Cup finishes, they can get a scholarship or move on to play in the Premier League, which is a paid job, or even play for the Reggae Boyz,” Edwards said.

These players have been giving it their all and they have been showing positive signs and we believe that with the correct motivation, I believe that we can do much better this season,” he said.

Denham Town have been drawn in Group D alongside Bridgeport, Greater Portmore, Innswood, St Jago and Tivoli Gardens.

Edwards pointed out that the teams are going to be difficult to beat and therefore they will not be taking anyone lightly.

“It is a good group and I think that the team that wants it the most will advance,” he said. “All the teams have been preparing and they have been preparing for Denham Town. It is up to us to maintain the discipline and the focus throughout the competition in order to be successful.”
