Dixon ready to help UWI
Linval Dixon, former national defender, has joined the coaching staff of Red Stripe Premier League outfit UWI FC for the 2018-19 season.
Dixon, who led Portmore United to the final of the league twice without winning, said he will be using his experience to help UWI become a contender for the title, as the team has been on the bubble of breaking into the top four of the league since they made their entry in the 2015-16 season.
“I am here to do the work. As you know, UWI has gone to the quarter-finals a few times, but has never been able to get over that hump and that is why we are here to help make that a reality,” Dixon said.
“UWI FC is a very good club and we have a lot of quality players here. It is just for us to get them to a level where we can contend and I believe we can do that.”
The 47-year-old has been out of the league since he was replaced as head coach of Portmore by Shavar Thomas at the beginning of the 2017-18 season.
Dixon has spent almost his entire career at his old club. He represented the club, Hazard United at the time, as a player between 1995 and 2002.
He then came up through the coaching ranks, being in charge of the under-23 team, before he was promoted to the senior team in 2010 and held the position of head coach up until the time of his departure.
“It was not hard to make the transition from Portmore to here because I was away from there for a season,” Dixon said. UWI FC were held to a 2-2 draw by Harbour View FC in their opening match of the season at the UWI Mona Bowl but Dixon saw some positive signs.
“We are seeing some good signs thus far. I think we should have won the game today (Thursday) but we will get it right, it is the first game of the season,” Dixon said.
