FAMILY LOSES THREE MEMBERS IN ONE MONTH

- ALICIA BARRETT STAR Writer

Afamily is left to pick up the pieces after three of its members died within the period of a month.

Shannon Hackett told THE STAR that his family lost twin sisters Paulette and Pauline Ricketts and Damion Wright earlier this year.

He said that his mother, 55year-old Pauline, and her twin sister, Paulette, had been diagnosed with breast cancer and battling for years.

“Four years ago, she was battling breast cancer, and she even got one of her breasts removed. Last December, she started complaining about pain in her other breast, and when we went to the hospital, we realised that the cancer was back,” Pauline’s common-law husband, Clifford Hackett, said.

Pauline and Paulette, who was also ailing, were both hospitalised. It was then that tragedy struck. Clifford’s nephew, Damion Wright, died of a heart attack on March 31.

Clifford said that the family was shaken because they did not expect this to happen. Shannon Hackett said that Damion, 32, was like a brother to him. While trying to cope with the sudden loss of his cousin, his mother, Pauline, died on April 1.

“Her last words to me were that I should work and make a good living,” he said.

Pauline’s sister, Paulette, lost her fight with breast cancer on May 1.

“It was a terrible experience because I was so close to all of them, especially my mom. I really miss them,” a tearful Shannon said.

Clifford, 59, said the past few months have been difficult for the family.
