P’more’s Rondee Smith revels in wonder brace

- AKINO MING

Portmore United Striker Rondee Smith showed everyone that the defending Red Stripe Premier League champions would not be short for goals despite the departure of talisman Maalique Foster.

Smith scored two superb goals in the first half of Portmore’s last encounter against Harbour View to register his team’s first victory of the season.

In minute 27, the former Happy Grove School player, with his back to the goal, controlled the ball on his chest from a throw-in then turned and fired home in a split second to defy the Harbour View custodian, Christian Kluvis.

Eight minutes later, he curled a shot into the right corner of the goal, also leaving Kluvis clueless.

But despite many football fans regarding Smith’s first strike as an early contender for goal of the season, the Portland native wants to remain humble as he has set his sights on becoming the competition’s leading goalscorer.

PRACTISE MORE

“After I scored the first goal, I just kept a level head because I knew the game wasn’t over. Plus, I know there are a lot of things I still have to work on in order to become the leading goalscorer,” Smith told STAR Sports yesterday. “The second goal is something that I practise more.” He continued: “I don’t want to say that I am the goto-man for Portmore yet because it is just one game. I am working on becoming a consistent goalscorer, and, hopefully, that means that I will be able to score as many goals as my team needs.”

Smith is looking to continue his prolific form when his side hosts Humble Lion tomorrow at the Spanish Town Prison Oval.
