Jamaican Madhouse to feed homeless on Heroes Day
Charity organisation Jamaican Madhouse is now gearing up to feed Jamaicans from across all 14 parishes in its upcoming fourth annual Heroes Day Dinner for the homeless, mentally ill and shut-ins. The event will take place on National Heroes Day, October 15. “It’s important to us to do this because, in essence, these are the forgotten people,” Shena Carty, head of Jamaican Madhouse, told the WESTERN STAR.
Carty said that in the past, the organisation has fed more than 2,000 persons islandwide, and the organisers are looking forward to increasing that number this year.
VALUABLE LIFE LESSON
“They let us know how appreciative they are when they get a meal,” she said.
Carty said that every parish will have a respective coordinator and a location for volunteers to meet up.
“Our volunteers are selfless. The younger ones are anxious to help and learn valuable life lessons from the people they assist, and they look forward to the next occasion for them to get the opportunity,” Carty said.
“On the other hand, the seasoned volunteers are appreciative. They are about giving, caring, and not receiving. To them, this has turned out to be more than just handing out meals on Heroes Day. It’s community bonding, unity, and togetherness,” she added.
