DANGEROUS SPUR TREE Men thankful after overturned truck misses house

-

Moments after a 10-wheeler truck got out of control and overturned in a section of Spur Tree called Freedom Valley, residents told Peter Farquharson that the vehicle had ended up in his yard.

This scenario was not farfetched to Farquharson as a few years ago, a market truck fell into his yard, only to be held up by a coconut tree.

“We all haffi hold up wi hand to God,” he said, adding, “The truck coulda come right here so inna me yard.”

Mindful that his friend, Roger Russell, had headed home before the crash, Farquharson, a sound system operator, said that when he turned off the sound, he wasn’t expecting to see the old two-room concrete house that sits below the level of the road standing.

Farquharson was a nervous wreck as he dashed home.

“Mi just switch off the breaker on the sound and run off, thinking about him, because him did lef come over. On me way, me meet him a come. When we come up, we see the truck and a whole heap a people. Dem say, ‘Bwoy, Peter, a unuh we a worry bout’.”

Russell, who was in the house at the time of the accident, recalled hearing a ‘’bangarang’’ and then a woman shouting for help.

“When mi go, a di woman inna di car. She did think seh people inna the truck weh gone over. Mi nuh know how it just come round the corner and just go over deh so. A jus’ Massa God work,” Russell said.

SHARP CORNER

The truck, having gone around a sharp corner, did not follow the natural angle that would have taken it into the yard. Instead, it fell off the road about 10 metres after passing the place that Farquharson and Russell call home.

But Russell and other residents told CENTRAL STAR that this non-fatal accident could have easily claimed lives.

Residents claimed that the driver and his female companion jumped out of the truck after it got out of control. The vehicle reportedly travelled about 100 metres down the narrow and winding Spur Tree main road before clipping a car at Farquharson and Russell’s gate.

“The man come outta the car and a look pon the car and a say: ‘The car mash up, the car mash up’,” Farquharson said.

Not far away, a frightened female driver stopped her car as the truck barrelled towards her. However, before the vehicles made impact, the truck darted over the sidewalk and fell off the road.

“Dah hill yah dangerous. When yuh deh walk pon it, you haffi a look round,” Farquharson said. “Mi woulda love if sup’m can do pon di hill yah to prevent dem kinda things yah.”
