Magee settling into ‘big man’ football

- NODLEY WRIGHT STAR Writer

Prodigious talent Tyreek Magee is now testing his mettle in the Red Stripe Premier League (RSPL). The former Jamaica College standout, who marvelled football fans at the schoolboy level, is determined to show that he can handle playing against the ‘big men’ in the nation’s top flight.

Now at Harbour View FC, the creative midfielder is determined to use the platform offered to demonstrate what he can do and silence his doubters, who have said he can only shine at the schoolboy level. Magee, however, is not phased by his critics and said he is focused on doing his best for himself and his team.

“People will be people, and they will always talk, but I know what I can do and my teammates believe in me. All I need to do is stay focused, continue on the path that I am, and keep doing what I am doing and keep improving,” McGee said.

Speaking after his team went down 2-1 to Mount Pleasant recently, the 19-year-old, who had a good game at an individual level, was not satisfied with his game as his team did not get a good result.

“Definitely, this game has shown that, yes, I can handle playing at this level, that I am ready. However, I am disappointed because I didn’t help my team to get the three points. For me, my job here tonight was incomplete,” the young playmaker expressed.

Magee is aware that with his size, he needs not only to adapt technically and tactically to the RSPL, but also physically. The midfielder said it’s all about developing physically to improve and adapt to the physicality of the league as well as to avoid injuries.

“Not being the biggest person, it’s all about working harder to become quicker. So it’s much harder for players to get close to me when I’m in possession of the football. I also need to gain some more muscle mass to help me cope with the physicality and prevent injuries, but for now, it’s all about working on my speed, as I don’t believe during the season is the best time to be bulking up in the gym,” Magee stated.
