Dehshh always had dreams of being a singer

- SHEREITA GRIZZLE

Today, she is hoping that she can turn her passion into an actual career.

“Music was always a big thing for me, so I was pretty much singing from the moment I could talk,” she told

“My grandmother realised that I had an interest in singing, and she enrolled me in summer classes at Sam Wisdom and Edna Manley College, and the passion started from there. After high school, I started picking up the music again, and I realised it was something I really wanted to do, and so I pursued it with all my heart. If it’s one thing I genuinely want to pursue in life, it’s music. Music is my happy place, it makes me comfortable.”

The young singer said that she takes the music seriously, and she has already established a team to help her launch her career.

“The type of music I do isn’t necessarily what most Jamaicans are willing to listen to. Most people want to hear the dancehall and reggae, and my music is very R&B. H.E.R and SZA are kinda who I sound like, so the challenges I have faced thus far is having record producers telling me I can’t “I write a lot about the things that I have been through. I know my experiences

are not

unique to me - other people are going through or have gone through similar stuff. I want my music to touch people. I want it to be relatable because music should touch people and resonate with them on a personal level,” she said, noting that her EP is now available on SoundCloud. “I have a song now out called It’s about being hurt, the typical relationship stuff. You feel like you’re not being treated as a priority and that you’re being taken for granted. I hope it helps everyone who has been through a heartbreak because I want my music to do that, give people strength to overcome hard times.”
